Professor Vanessa M. Hayes
Petre Chair of Prostate Cancer Research, University of Sydney and Laboratory Head and Professor, Human Comparative and Prostate Cancer Genomics, Garvan Institute of Medical Research
Professor Hayes has an extensive track record in defining genetic risk factors for in particular prostate cancer, using large Australian-based resources, and a 20 year track-record in Cancer Genetics. Her interest lies in defining genetic events that drive prostate cancer risk, clinical outcomes and ultimately response to treatment. Professor Hayes has played a significant role in establishing genomic technologies within Australia. In 2010 she led a large international effort to publish the most diverse human genomes to date, making a significant contribution to understanding human diversity. In 2011 she used this technology to sequence the DNA of the Tasmanian devil and its facial cancer. These studies led to her recruitment to San Diego where she led a research team at arguably the world’s leading genomics institute, before returning to Australia earlier this year. Keeping her interested in defining the extent of human and cancer genome diversity, the team has now turned their attention to genome mapping allowing for the detection of hard-to-detect large structural variation to compliment current DNA sequencing technologies. The lab is the first in the country to adopt the new BioNano Irys Genome Mapping system. Professor Hayes is also actively involved in policy development related to genomics and global impact, with a particular focus on indigenous health, and holds a number of conjoint/extraordinary Professorship positions across the globe.
