My name is Badwi (Bobby) Boumelhem, and I a third year PhD student at the University of Sydney (USYD). I completed my Bachelors of Science at USYD in 2012 and commenced a Masters of Philosophy shortly after. After two years of research, I transferred into the PhD programme. Working within the Discipline of Physiology under the tutelage of Dr. Stephen Assinder and Dr. Stuart Fraser, I am aiming to establish a system to differentiate mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells into mature, functional cells of the prostate. This will be useful as there are currently no in-vitro models of prostate organogenesis. We have identified the presence of urothelial cells (progenitor cells to prostate epithelium) via the gene expression of uroplakins 1a, 1b and 2, as well as gene expression of androgen receptor, a morphoregulatory gene critical for prostate formation in-vivo. Once we have generated prostate epithelium from mES, we will look at the formation of prostatic cells from mES that over-express known oncogenes involved in prostate cancer.
