George Joun

The University of Sydney, NSW, Australia

Dr George Joun is an early career researcher in cancer epigenetics at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney. His PhD (completed June 2022) investigated mechanisms of drug resistance in ovarian cancer, employing a single cell approach to probe drug resistant clones. His doctoral thesis has resulted in two first author manuscripts (in preparation), and three published first- and co-author papers. Dr Joun has mastered sophisticated molecular biology techniques including next generation sequencing, deep bioinformatic analysis and genetic engineering. Most recently, his work has culminated in the discovery of PRDM9 in drug tolerant persister cells of glioblastoma, showing how PRDM9 hardwires metabolic transcriptional networks under therapeutic stress causing glioblastoma survival. He is first author on the resulting manuscript currently accepted in principle in Nature Communications. Dr Joun has supervised two PhD students (both co-first authors) in a second manuscript integrating state-of-the-art pharmacological analysis with genetic and epigenetic screens conducted in glioblastoma. The manuscript is under review in Nature Chemical Biology. Dr Joun is second author. The paper has implications for future clinical drug usage. Dr Joun holds the Helen and Robert Ellis Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, worth $396,129 over three years (2025-2027). Additionally, Dr Joun has secured $113,500 AUD in research funding to date. Dr Joun has mentored five PhD and five Honours students. Moreover, he has co-developed a training platform for staff and students in next generation sequencing techniques at his institute. He has presented at five national and at the 9th Tumor Microenvironment and Cellular Stress conference; Aegean Conferences in Kalamata, Greece, winning a $700 award from Aegean Conferences for attendance.
